Owl Philippines A6 Journal (Review)

Philippines

Look at that lovely thing standing out around a few white items I could find around my room! ♡

When I saw that Owl Philippines dropped their dotted journals a few month ago, I was not one to think twice. I immediately got an A5 and an A6. I could easily add to cart more, but my blog budget kept that from happening. Sayang. 😅

The last review we did in the blog was the Papernotes Mini Journal, and from one A6 to another, I present you Owl Philippines's A6 Dotted Journal.

Let's begin. ♥

THE LAYOUT

Laguna-based, Owl Philippines is an online shop that came to existence in 2020. They specialize in notebooks meant to use as journals to promote mental wellness in response to the pandemic stress.

So far, they offer the most affordable customized notebooks that aren't compromised in quality in Shopee. Their runner were their personalized ruled journals that came in 10 colors: blue, red, black, yellow, pastel pink, light orange, dark green, apple green, light blue, and black.

Not very long ago, they released their dotted collection, and here's the A6 journal features:

  • PU leather cover
  • 100 sheets of 100 GSM paper
  • hard bound
  • elastic rubber band
  • gusseted back pocket
  • 1 ribbon bookmark
  • smyth sewn, which means it can be laid flat
  • comes in ruled and dotted
  • ruled ones can be customized with four fonts to choose from: Times New Roman, Arial, Typewriter, or Corsiva
  • dotted ones are yet to be customized⏤let's just wait and see ✨

Here is another WIP spread featuring some Bombpepper goodies:

PEN-TO-PAPER TEST

We've arrived in the part where we see how the paper fares against different pens. We'll mainly check ghosting and bleeding, and the following markers were used:

  • Tombow ABT brush pen
  • Crayola Supertips marker
  • DS retractable highlighter
  • Stabilo Point 88 fineliner
  • Sakura Pigma Micron 0.4
  • Pilot G-2 0.38
  • Muji ballpoint pen 0.38
  • Pilot Juice Up 0.3
  • Pilot Progrex 07

Findings:
  1. I am honestly so pleasantly surprised. There's barely any ghosting and bleeding! 😍
  2. For transparency, the minute ghosting came from darker and thicker inks.
  3. (Not in photo) I tried piling on strokes to see if the paper would hold thicker inks okay, and I'm happy to report that the paper did well.

THE YELLOW LEGAL PAD TEST

pros

  1. I'm a fan of the overall aesthetic of the notebook. The cover has no other design on it, and I'm a fan. It's simple yet looks expensive. It reminds me of a Moleskine A6 hard cover, except that one has like a debossed logo.
  2. Just like my Kwaderno journal, I also like the shade of the dots in this notebook. It's not too dark that it's distracting, and it's not too light that you can barely see it.
  3. It has 100 leaves of 100 GSM paper, and at only a 140 pesos! It's an actual steal 🙌🏻
  4. Most pens and markers won't bleed or ghost on the page, which I think is a really good thing especially if you want to make this your art journal.
  5. I really love all notebooks that have my journal trinity: ribbon bookmark, gusseted back compartment, and an elastic band. This one checks all three!
  6. A good range of colors to choose from. There's ten available: blue, red, black, yellow, pastel pink, light orange, dark green, apple green, light blue, and black.
  7. There's four fonts available for customization. Period.

cons

  1. The paper is thick, but it's not smooth. I would not necessarily count this as a con per se and also given the price, but to be fair⏤since we considered paper smoothness as a pro on other journals we reviewed in the past⏤I listed it here.
  2. Their Shopee description said their paper is ivory. It's white in person. Please take note of this if you want to order so you don't get disappointed, especially if you're a cream-paper lover.
  3. You can't personalize dotted ones just yet. I was honestly let down when I realized their customization service was only available for the ruled ones.
  4. It's only available on Shopee. While online shopping has been more popular now than ever, it's kinda sad that it's only (currently) exclusive in one shop. Would've be better too if they open a Lazada shop for those who prefer Lazada.

All in all, I would say that the Owl Philippines A6 dotted journal is a total bang for your buck. If you want to start your art journal, this one can be a perfect choice for beginners.
