SWATCHES

I swatched these pens on a Basic Spiral Notebook from my shop, Plainpaca, because I love the light-cream colored paper, which I thought would make the pens' colors pop more for the purpose.

THE PEN-TO-PAPER TEST

For this test, I wanted to test it on both 80 GSM paper and 100 GSM paper to cater to most of you who use either or both. :)

I used both PaperNotes journals (which you know I love⏤just ordered in new journals from them actually! haha). I used the classic A5 / 100gsm and the mini A6 / 80 gsm.

(Also, sorry for the weird lighting here [and all the other photos on this entry]. I took these on a cloudy day and relied mostly on an indoor bulb for lighting. For clarifications/questions, I'll be very happy to answer them on the comments section. 🤗)

Findings
  1. There's definitely glaring ghosting on most of the shades, especially the darker ones. Though I'm not mad about it; quite frankly, I expected that since that's usually the case with fineliners.
  2. Happy to note there isn't any bleeding in sight. But I do think that it will bleed as soon as you run past the same line you created. So I wouldn't recommend it for coloring in on an 80gsm paper (but that's just me!).

Findings

  1. Lesser striking ghosting, so I would say it'll be okay to use for coloring in your sketches and doodles on an 100gsm and higher paper.
  2. I'm seeing a potential bleeding in little dots (check the second line), which seems weird given that it didn't bleed on the A6. But then that could just be by the way I held the pen or how I write.

THE YELLOW LEGAL PAD TEST

pros

  1. It has a ton of colors! This collection even has 8 more colors than its counterpart, the Point 68 fineliners. With that, I think that its great not just for journaling but for any other creative projects.
  2. It's super accessible, and that's always appreciated. You can buy it online or at National Bookstore stores, SM Department stores (stationery section), and Art Bar branches.
  3. I like how it creates these thin lines, when some fineliners tend to be thicker because of the material used on the tip.

cons

  1. I'm not the biggest fan of the body color; it reminds me a lot of Mongol pencils, if I may says so. (Sorry, Stabilo!)
  2. I probably don't have the best eye for color, but I've noticed that some of the colors don't match its name. As an example, if we refer to the swatches, we can see that Olive Green (#63) seems a tad bit dark for the shade, Violet (#55) seems to be look more blue violet, and Azure (#57) seems a little bit brighter than it should be. But then again, I'm not the expert on this, so take this one with a grain of salt.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I am recommending these for sure! Shade naming aside, I think that the colors are really pretty and diverse, so there's

Especially if you're on a budget, I think that these will really give you a bang for your buck, and it's a classic staple, so you at least have that assurance that it's got good reputation. For more tips on how to make journaling affordable, click here. ♥︎

Comments

  1. Hi, thanks for the review. Do you know any pen that is good for coloring on 90 gsm paper and don't do ghosting?

    1. Hi, Yukitari! Sorry my response took a while. I would recommend the Tombow ABT dual brush pens for coloring. I think their ink formula is fantastic. I haven't experienced any ghosting using it on an 80 gsm sheet, so I think it'll work well with a 90 gsm paper as well (probably even better!). Hope this helps! ♥
